SHAW AND SONS STRUCTURAL
CONCRETE

Shaw & Sons was founded in 1948 as a provider of structural concrete and related
services to Southern California's rapidly growing commerical and industrial
development industries. The company has built more than 700 concrete structures,
including industrial and institutional facilities and high-rise buildings,
and holds patents for several innovative products designed to make the installtion
of structural concrete more efficient and less costly.
Bringing to each of its projects the experience and expertise of both a master
carpenter and seasoned concrete supplier, Shaw & Sons gives exhaustive attention
to each detail, and precision engineering and workmanship ensure that the
pieces fit together as designed. In its 59 years of business, Shaw & Sons
is proud to say that it has never been involved in litigation over any of
its projects. Furthermore, the company's highly experienced personnel excel
at project management and bring to each project the ability to solve almost
any construction related problem.

WELLS FARGO 16-STORY,
IRVINE, CA
Shaw & Sons was awarded one of the largest contracts of this project phase
including all the structural concrete for the 16-story building, on and off
site concrete roadways, civil, cast-in-place hardscape and walls, subterranean
mechanical rooms and reservoirs. As on all structural buildings, Shaw & Sons
accurately set all columns, base plates to within design specifications without
modifications to structural steel and carried out the design specifications
to completion of the surrounding hardscape.
Shaw & Sons was responsible for providing concrete for this project phase,
as well as the prior phase. Project includes 16-story structural building
and seat walls with a roadway dividing the two phases. An excessive level
of sulfate content in the soil coupled with a high groundwater table required
preventative measures such as type V cement with a low water-to-cement ratio
of 0.45. The project also consisted of dam-type cutoff walls with water stops
outlining all irrigated areas, and two feet of select fill over native soil.
PACIFIC BELL BUILDING, ANAHEIM, CAPacific Bell'seight-story
building in Anaheim was constructed of structural concrete within days of
the original completion scheduel. Throughout the duration of construction,
dut to Shaw & Sons' patented deck pour system, floor slabs did not require
any of the typical floor filling or grinding usually needed with other construction
systems.
MACARTHUR PLACE, SANTA ANA, CA
Starting with only the excavated basement, Shaw & Sons constructed the MacArthur 12-story foundation coulmn pads, grade beams, tie beams, cast-in-place basement walls, slab on grade, elevated floors, roof pads and mechanical pads and curbs for a complete package f structural concrete construction on time and within budget for the Austin Company.
PRADA, BEVERLY HILLS, CA
Shaw & Sons was contracted for the construction of the three story Prada retail building on Rodeo Drive, A fashion icon; Prada is one of the world’s leading retailers of women’s designer apparel and accessories. The project presented a challenging urban infill construction process, including footings, grade beams, column pads, four levels of black structural concrete at the elevator and stairs corridor, white concrete structural walls, and site and civil concrete. Shaw & Sons unique system for setting street beams and interface with existing structural conditions enabled a smooth erection of steel framing and shaved approximately two months off the project schedule. All steel beams were pre-set with bolt plate connections to the concrete walls prior to concrete construction. The project also demanded close cooperation with the City of Beverly Hills and adjacent property owners and tenants.

Shaw & Sons has worked for the past five decades in many cities with strict building rules such as Beverly Hills without ever being cited or having work stopped. Certain cities demand professional craftsmen such as those who work for Shaw & Sons with attitudes that respect rules and regulations, and especially safety issues.

Shaw & Sons recently completed two structural buildings on Rodeo Drive- the Prada building and the 308 Rodeo Drive retail building- as part of its infill project resume, as well as replacing Beverly Hills’ cross walks with specified Lithocrete paving. As with all construction projects in Beverly Hills, concrete pours must take place at night to avoid any disruption of daytime business or other activities.

TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION, TORRANCE, CA
Utilizing “green” concrete is one of Shaw & Sons capabilities. At the Toyota Motor Corporation facility in Torrance, Ca, Shaw and Sons’ workman safely re-sized existing cast-in-place wall panels to retrofit them into place at the new Alternative Fuel Vehicle facility. The retrofitting saved Toyota thousands of dollars in construction costs and recycled concrete that would have otherwise been wasted. With Shaw & Sons more than 56 years of experience, the company’s extensive resource of knowledge and expertise helps simplify complicated projects such as this retrofit.
